Victims and sentencing

Wednesday, November 26, 2003

“Let?s keep the victim out of it: [. . .] it was no surprise to see that the television news coverage of the sentence of Lockerbie-bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi featured only one of the two sets of relatives present: the ones who called for him “never to walk this earth as a free man”. Defying the old adage that the unusual “man bites dog” is more newsworthy than the converse, you would have had to read The Herald to find out there was another relative present who said: “I am still not convinced that this man did what he is being sentenced for, and if he did he certainly didn’t do it by himself. It is painful for us that there are still so many questions unanswered.”

Unanswered questions are not the stuff of which television news bulletins or tabloid headlines are made. . .” Herald Comment
