“Jailing 30,000 won?t beat crime, warns expert: Scotland could end up with a prison population of more than 30,000 unless politicians rethink their strategy on criminal justice, according to a leading academic and former governor of three Scottish jails. Professor Andrew Coyle, director of the International Centre for Prison Studies (ICPS), King?s College, London, said ministers must decide whether they are serious about cutting the prison population? which now stands at 6500 north of the Border ? before deciding on issues such as tackling reoffending. . .” Sunday Herald
