Grappling with the alcohol culture: Nicholson Review; drink/drug driving and binge drinking

Monday, December 08, 2003

Review of Liquor Licensing Law in Scotland approaches, Scotland’s police signal their reservations about liberalisation, launch the seasonal campaign against drink and drug driving, and the Old Firm football club managers unite in a campaign against binge drinking.

“Police chiefs say Scots can?t hold their drink: Scotland’s chief constables have warned Jack McConnell, the first minister, against relaxing the country?s drinking laws because, they claim, Scots cannot hold their drink. They believe Scots are not as mature as other Europeans and would use the opportunity of longer opening hours to binge-drink, leading to higher levels of public drunkenness, violence, accidents, injuries and sexual attacks. . .” Sunday Times Scotland

“Scots not ready for relaxed drinking laws: Police concerns that Scottish drinkers are not ready for a continental-style relaxation in drinking laws were backed yesterday by the Scottish Licensed Trade Association. The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) believes Scotland is a decade behind Europe with its attitude to drinking. . .” Scotsman
