“New laws cause outrage: For the past three years, many now-convicted murderers have walked the streets unhindered for up to a year before being found guilty of the most heinous offence on the statute books, thanks to the introduction of new European laws on human rights [. . .] Although statistics are notoriously difficult to acquire, it is believed that at least half of the people accused of murder or attempted murder now enjoy freedom until their trials instead of what used to be an automatic remand in custody. . .” Evening Telegraph
