Antisocial Behaviour Bill: the political web sites

Monday, November 10, 2003

“First Minister defends anti-social behaviour Bill: Following Jack McConnell’s speech in Glasgow today (Saturday) where he has defended his plans to tackle anti-social behaviour, Shadow Justice Minister Ms Nicola Sturgeon MSP has warned the First Minister that he cannot rely on tough talk to tackle the problem. Ms Sturgeon said: “While I welcome the Anti-social behaviour Bill in theory, it is vital the Scottish Government uses the legislation sensibly to target the behaviour of the minority of young people that cause havoc in their local communities. . ."“ Scottish Nationalist Party

“Anti-Social Behaviour bill published: A package of measures to tackle the scourge of anti-social behaviour was unveiled today. The Anti-Social Behaviour Etc. (Scotland) Bill will make the legal framework for tackling the problem more effective, and marks the latest stage in the Executive?s anti-social behaviour action plan for the second Parliament.

The Bill follows a summer of unprecedented consultation when communities, organisations and individuals across Scotland delivered a clear message to Ministers that they were fed up of anti-social behaviour and wanted action from Government. . .” Scottish Labour 30.10.03

“‘Draconian’ law could make anti-social behaviour worse, say Greens: Green MSP Patrick Harvie today spoke out against a “draconian” new law which police will be able to use to disperse groups of people who are committing no crime. . .” Scottish Greens

“Sturgeon welcomes Anti-Social Behaviour Bill: Shadow Justice Minster Ms Nicola Sturgeon MSP, has welcomed the publication of the Anti-Social Behaviour Bill today (Thursday) but has warned the Executive not to stigmatise all young people for the behaviour of a minority. . .” Scottish National Party

“Tough talk on youth crime - MSPs state the case:[. . .] Rosie Kane, Scottish Socialist Party MSP; I hope readers will excuse me for not mincing my words, but anyone associated with the Executive’s document, `Putting Our Communities First’, should be hanging their head in shame.

The Executive seems to have invented a new crime to level at Scotland’s young people - is there to be a Hanging Around (Scotland) bill? I’d like to ask communities minister Margaret Curran if the name Easterhouse Community Centre means anything to her. It’s a facility in her own constituency that the local community repeatedly tried to save but which in the end fell to the Labour blitzkrieg that has flattened scores of Scotland’s community facilities. . .“ Scottish Socialist Party (Extract from the Big Issue Scotland Issue 433 - no link).
