Whisky duty fraud

“Fresh hope for whisky chiefs over moves to beat fraud: Scotch whisky chiefs were given fresh hope yesterday that the chancellor would scrap plans to impose strip stamps on the industry amid growing confidence that a compromise could be reached. . .” Herald 11.02.04.

“Watchdogs to investigate spirits fraud claims: Claims that fraud is depriving the Treasury of the duty on one in every six bottles of spirits sold are to be investigated by government financial watchdogs, MSPs heard last night [. . .] The move was disclosed by Lewis Macdonald, the deputy enterprise minister, in a Holyrood debate on proposals for a scheme which would require all bottles of whisky and other spirits to come with a strip stamp to prove all taxes and duties have been paid. . .” Scotsman
