The Costs, Sentencing Profiles and the Scottish Criminal Justice System 2003: section 306 document contains useful information designed to enable “people engaged in the administration of criminal justice to become aware of the financial implications of their decisions.”
For example, for the year 2003-4 the estimated cost of 6 months in prison in Scotland was £16,622. The average cost of a standard probation order was £1173 and the average cost of a community service order was £1499.
